Powerline adapters

Powerline adapters

Powerline adapters send a network signal through a building's mains wiring, so they suit homes and offices where Wi-Fi is weak or running a cable is impractical. Our range covers starter kits, add-on adapters and models with built-in Wi-Fi, from brands such as TP-Link, devolo, FRITZ! and ALLNET, alongside wider network names like Cisco and Poynting.

How to choose a powerline adapter

Speed rating. Figures such as 500, 600, 1000 or 2000 Mbps are theoretical maximums for the link over the mains wiring. Real speeds are usually lower and depend on the age and quality of the wiring. Lower ratings cope with browsing and HD streaming, while faster ones suit 4K video, gaming and large file transfers.

Wired only or with Wi-Fi. A basic adapter gives you Ethernet ports for a TV, console or desktop PC. A model with a built-in Wi-Fi access point also spreads wireless coverage into the room where it is plugged in, which helps in an outbuilding or upstairs bedroom.

Ports and pass-through socket. Look for Gigabit Ethernet ports, because a 100 Mbps port will cap the speed of a fast adapter. A pass-through socket keeps the wall outlet usable and is a sensible feature when sockets are scarce.

Standard and pairing. Adapters need to use the same powerline standard, such as HomePlug AV2 or G.hn, to talk to each other. Staying with one brand and one product family is the safest route. A starter kit contains two adapters, and extra units can be added later to reach more rooms.

Wiring and placement. Both adapters must be on the same electrical circuit, and they work best plugged straight into a wall socket. Extension leads and surge protectors often weaken the signal unless the adapter has its own filtered pass-through.

Brands we carry

  • TP-Link: known for affordable home powerline kits, including versions with a Wi-Fi access point.
  • devolo: a German company that specialises in powerline networking and is closely associated with the dLAN and Magic product lines.
  • FRITZ!: the AVM brand, whose powerline adapters are designed to work smoothly with FRITZ!Box routers.
  • Cisco: a major name in business networking, relevant if you are building a larger office network.
  • Ubiquiti: known for UniFi and airMAX network gear used in small business and campus setups.
  • Poynting: a South African maker best known for antennas and signal accessories.

Also in our range: ALLNET, LevelOne, Lenovo, TechniSat, Value and Renkforce. Some brands here are better known for other network hardware, so check the product title to confirm that a listing is a powerline adapter.

Powerline adapter FAQ

Can I mix powerline adapters from different brands?

Sometimes, but it is not guaranteed. Adapters from different makers can work together if they follow the same standard, such as HomePlug AV2. Features like encryption setup and speed boosting may only work properly within one brand, so matching units is the safer choice.

Do powerline adapters work through extension leads?

They can, but performance often drops. Extension leads and surge protectors can filter out the data signal. Plug each adapter directly into a wall socket, or use a model with a built-in filtered pass-through.

Are powerline adapters better than a Wi-Fi extender?

It depends on the building. Powerline adapters are often steadier where thick walls or several floors block wireless signal, because the data travels through the wiring. A Wi-Fi extender is simpler where the mains wiring is old or split across several circuits.

How many powerline adapters do I need?

You need at least two: one connected to your router and one in the room you want to reach. A starter kit covers this. Each extra room needs one more adapter, as long as all units are compatible and on the same circuit.
