GPON and XPON terminals

GPON and XPON terminals are the optical units that connect a home or office to a fibre-to-the-home line, for buyers replacing or adding an ONT or ONU on a passive optical network. The main types are bridge-mode terminals and ONT routers with built-in Wi-Fi. No brands are listed in this category at the moment.

How to choose a GPON or XPON terminal

Network standard. GPON and EPON are different passive optical network standards, and a terminal built for one will not work on the other. XPON units detect the network type and work on either, which makes them useful when you are unsure what your provider runs. Faster 10G standards such as XGS-PON need their own hardware.

Bridge or router. A bridge-mode terminal only converts the optical signal to Ethernet and leaves routing to a separate router. An ONT router also handles Wi-Fi, DHCP and firewalling in one box. Choose a bridge if you already own a good router or mesh system, and an ONT router if you want a single device.

Ports and speed. Check that the LAN ports are gigabit at minimum. If your fibre line is faster than 1 Gbps, look for a 2.5 Gbps port, otherwise the port becomes the limit. Some terminals add a telephone (POTS) port for VoIP, which matters only if you still use a landline handset.

Wi-Fi standard. On terminals with wireless, Wi-Fi 5 is enough for a small flat with a few devices. Wi-Fi 6 copes better with many connected devices and larger homes. Dual-band support (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) is the sensible minimum.

Provider compatibility. Many fibre providers only activate terminals they have approved or can provision remotely, and some supply their own unit. Ask your provider whether third-party terminals are accepted and what details they need, such as the serial number or MAC address. Also confirm the connector type, since GPON lines commonly use SC/APC and a mismatched patch lead can degrade the signal.

Terminal types and brands

  • Bridge ONT/ONU: a single-purpose unit with one or more Ethernet ports, suited to people who run their own router.
  • ONT router: combines the optical terminal, router and Wi-Fi access point, which keeps the setup simple with fewer cables.
  • XPON dual-mode unit: supports both GPON and EPON, so it can move with you between networks.

No manufacturers are currently listed in this category, so compare models on standard, ports and provider compatibility rather than on brand name.

GPON and XPON terminal FAQ

What is the difference between GPON and XPON?

GPON is one specific passive optical network standard, while XPON is a general term covering GPON, EPON and similar systems. An XPON terminal can usually work on more than one of them. A plain GPON terminal works only on GPON networks.

Can I use my own ONT with any fibre provider?

Not always. Many providers allow only approved terminals or configure the unit remotely, and some lock the connection to their own equipment. Contact your provider before buying and ask whether a third-party ONT is supported.

Do I need a separate router with a GPON terminal?

It depends on the terminal. A bridge-mode ONT needs a router behind it to share the connection. An ONT router already includes routing and Wi-Fi, so a separate router is optional.

Which connector does a GPON terminal use?

Most GPON terminals use an SC connector, and the polish type is usually APC, normally shown by a green connector. Plugging in an UPC lead instead can cause signal loss. Check your provider's fibre lead before connecting.
