Mesh Wi-Fi systems

Mesh Wi-Fi systems

Mesh Wi-Fi systems in our range are sets of routers and satellite units that work as one wireless network, which suits larger homes, multi-storey houses and small offices with weak spots. You will find mesh systems, mesh routers and single satellites from TP-Link, ASUS, Ubiquiti and Xiaomi, among others, in Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 versions.

How to choose a mesh Wi-Fi system

Coverage and number of units. A two-pack is usually enough for a flat or a single-storey home, while a large or multi-storey house with thick walls often needs three units. Check whether you are buying a full set or one unit, because our range includes complete mesh systems as well as individual mesh routers and satellites.

Wi-Fi standard. Our range covers Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7. Wi-Fi 6 copes well with many connected phones, TVs and smart devices, and Wi-Fi 7 pays off mainly when your laptops and phones support it too. Wi-Fi 5 is enough for browsing and streaming on a modest connection.

Bands and backhaul. Most systems here are dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), and some are tri-band, either with an added 6 GHz band or with a second 5 GHz band. A third band can be used for the link between units, which helps keep speeds up in larger homes where the units must relay a lot of traffic.

Ethernet ports. Many models offer two or three LAN ports per unit, and a few have four. Ports let you plug in a TV, games console or NAS directly, and connecting the units to each other by cable gives steadier speeds than a wireless link.

Management and ecosystem. Home systems are normally set up through a phone app in a few minutes. Ubiquiti, MikroTik and Cambium Networks products give more control over networks, which suits technical users and small businesses. Units from different brands generally cannot be combined into one mesh, so buy extra units from the same family.

Mesh Wi-Fi brands we carry

  • TP-Link: the largest group in our range, and the maker of the Deco family of home mesh systems.
  • ASUS: known for AiMesh, which lets compatible ASUS routers join together in one mesh network.
  • Ubiquiti: its UniFi line is widely used for managed networks in offices, shops and larger homes.
  • Xiaomi: a consumer electronics maker whose mesh routers fit alongside its smart home devices.
  • Netgear: known for the Orbi series of mesh systems with dedicated links between units.
  • D-Link: offers the Covr series of mesh Wi-Fi kits for home use.
  • MikroTik and Cambium Networks: network equipment brands aimed at professional installers and detailed configuration.

Also in our range: Tenda, Reyee, Cudy and Strong.

Mesh Wi-Fi frequently asked questions

How many mesh units do I need for my home?

Two units cover most flats and average houses, and three suit larger or multi-storey homes. Thick concrete or brick walls reduce range, so a home with many of them may need an extra unit. Place the units about one room apart rather than at the edge of the signal.

Is a mesh system better than a Wi-Fi extender?

For whole-home coverage, a mesh system is usually better. The units share one network name and hand your devices over automatically as you move around. A basic extender often cuts speed on the repeated signal and may create a separate network.

Do I need a Wi-Fi 7 mesh system?

Not necessarily. Wi-Fi 7 is worth considering if you have fast internet and devices that support it, or want to prepare for future upgrades. If most of your devices are older, a Wi-Fi 6 system will perform well for everyday use.

Can I use a mesh system with my existing router?

Yes, in most cases. You can connect the main mesh unit to your current router by Ethernet and switch it to access point mode, or replace the router entirely. Check the settings of your internet provider's router, as some need bridge mode to avoid double network address translation.
