Wi-Fi range extenders

Wi-Fi range extenders

Wi-Fi range extenders pick up an existing wireless signal and repeat it into rooms where coverage is weak, which suits homes and small offices with dead spots. Our range of over 20 models covers plug-in extenders and desktop units from TP-Link, Xiaomi, AVM and Ubiquiti, along with several other networking brands.

How to choose a Wi-Fi range extender

Wi-Fi standard and speed. Match the extender to your router. A modern Wi-Fi 6 router paired with an older, slower extender will limit the speed of every device that connects through it. Check the rated speeds and whether the extender is dual-band, since two bands give it more room to work with.

Compatibility with your router. Most extenders work with any router, but some brands add extra features when used with their own equipment. TP-Link units can join a OneMesh network with a compatible TP-Link router, and AVM extenders work especially well with FRITZ!Box routers. In both cases you get one network name and smoother handover between devices.

Placement and wired connection. An extender needs a decent signal to repeat, so it belongs roughly halfway between the router and the dead spot, not inside it. Many extenders in our range have one Ethernet LAN (RJ-45) port, and a few have two. That port lets you connect a smart TV, games console or desktop PC by cable, which is usually more stable than Wi-Fi.

Power and indicators. The extenders in our range that list a power input accept 100 to 240 V AC, so they run from a normal wall socket. LED indicators for power, signal strength, WLAN or WPS are useful during setup because they show whether the unit sits close enough to the router. Where the listed operating temperature is 0 to 40 °C, keep the unit indoors and away from heat sources.

Wi-Fi range extender brands we carry

  • TP-Link: the largest group in our range, known for its RE series of extenders and for OneMesh support with compatible TP-Link routers.
  • Xiaomi: a consumer electronics brand whose extenders are designed for simple home setups and fit alongside its other smart home products.
  • AVM: the German maker of FRITZ! networking products, whose repeaters are built to work with FRITZ!Box routers and mesh networks.
  • Ubiquiti: known for UniFi networking, which is managed centrally and aimed at offices and larger properties rather than a single flat.
  • Grandstream Networks: a business-oriented maker, best known for VoIP telephony and office networking products.

Also in our range: Vivolink, Kramer, TRENDnet and D-Link.

Wi-Fi range extender FAQ

Where is the best place to put a Wi-Fi range extender?

Place it about halfway between your router and the area with poor signal, in a spot where it still receives at least a good signal from the router. Putting it right in the dead spot only repeats a weak signal. Many models have signal strength LEDs that help you find the right socket.

Does a range extender slow down my internet?

It can reduce speed on the devices that connect through it, because the extender has to receive and resend the same data. Single-band units are affected most, and throughput can drop noticeably. Dual-band extenders handle this better, and a cable connection through the Ethernet port avoids the wireless loss on that device.

What is the difference between a range extender and a mesh system?

A range extender adds coverage to an existing router, while a mesh system replaces the router with several units that work as one network. Extenders cost less and are simple to add to what you already own. Some extenders, such as TP-Link models with OneMesh, can join a mesh-style setup with a compatible router.

Can I connect a wired device to a range extender?

Yes, if the extender has an Ethernet LAN (RJ-45) port. Many models in our range have one port, and some have two. A wired connection suits devices that stay in one place, such as a TV, a games console or a desktop PC.
