Wi-Fi routers

Wi-Fi routers connect phones, laptops, TVs and smart devices to the internet and to each other, over wireless and wired links. This category suits households, home offices and small businesses replacing an ageing router or fixing weak coverage. Typical products are single routers, mesh systems and routers with a built-in modem.

How to choose a Wi-Fi router

Wi-Fi standard. Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) is still fine for a small flat with a modest line. Wi-Fi 6 handles many connected devices more smoothly, and Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 add extra spectrum and higher peak speeds, which mainly pay off if your phones and laptops support them too.

Coverage and mesh. A single router is enough for a small flat or an open-plan home. In a multi-storey house or one with thick brick walls, a mesh system with two or three units gives steadier signal than one router placed in a corner. Where the router sits matters as much as the model: central and raised is best.

Internet connection type. Fibre lines usually need a router that plugs into the provider's ONT through a WAN port, while some DSL and LTE or 5G connections need a router with a built-in modem or SIM slot. Check what your provider supplies before buying, so you do not pay for features you cannot use.

Ports and wired speed. Gigabit Ethernet ports are the minimum for a fast fibre line. If your plan is above 1 Gbps, or you move large files to a NAS, look for a 2.5 Gbps WAN or LAN port. Count the LAN ports needed for a desktop PC, console, TV box or access point.

Security and management. Look for WPA3 support, a guest network, parental controls and regular firmware updates. A simple phone app for setup helps if you do not want to work through a browser menu, while advanced users may prefer VLAN, VPN and QoS settings.

Router types and brands

  • Standard Wi-Fi routers: a single box with wireless and wired ports, suited to flats and small houses where one position covers the whole space.
  • Mesh Wi-Fi systems: a main unit plus satellites that share one network name, built for larger or awkwardly shaped homes.
  • Routers with a built-in modem: combine a DSL, LTE or 5G modem with a router, which reduces the number of boxes and power cables.
  • Business and advanced routers: add VPN, VLAN and multiple WAN options for offices and home labs.

Check the manufacturer on each product page for warranty terms and firmware update history before you decide.

Wi-Fi router FAQ

What is the difference between a router and a modem?

A modem connects your home to your internet provider's line, while a router shares that connection with your devices over Wi-Fi and cables. Some devices combine both functions in one box. Fibre connections usually use a separate ONT supplied by the provider, with a router plugged into it.

Do I need a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 router?

Not necessarily. Wi-Fi 6 suits most homes with many connected devices, and Wi-Fi 7 mainly benefits fast fibre lines and newer devices that support it. Older devices still connect to newer routers, but they will not gain the extra speed.

When is a mesh system better than a single router?

A mesh system is better when one router cannot reach every room, for example in a double-storey house or one with thick walls. The units work together as one network, so devices move between them without switching networks manually. In a small flat, a single router is usually enough.

Will a new router make my internet faster?

It can, but only up to the speed of your internet plan. A new router helps if the old one has slow ports, weak Wi-Fi or poor coverage. If your line is already slow, a better router will not raise the speed your provider delivers.
