How to choose a power tool battery or charger
Battery platform. Batteries are generally tied to a manufacturer's system, so a pack must match the brand and voltage of your tools. Check the system name and voltage printed on your current battery before ordering, because the same brand can sell more than one voltage class.
Capacity in Ah. Amp-hours show how long a battery runs on one charge. Smaller packs of around 2 Ah to 3 Ah are light and suit drills and screwdrivers, while larger packs of 5 Ah and above suit saws, grinders and other tools that draw a lot of power. A bigger pack is heavier and takes longer to charge.
Charger speed. A standard charger is fine for occasional use, but a rapid charger makes sense if you work through several batteries a day. Some chargers take two or more packs at once, which helps on a job site. Make sure the charger supports your battery type and voltage.
Tool demand. High-drain tools such as angle grinders, circular saws and garden machines need batteries that can deliver high current without overheating. Packs labelled for high output or professional use are built for this. For light jobs, a standard pack is enough.

Can I use a Makita battery in a Bosch tool?
No, not directly. Most manufacturers use their own battery interface, so a Makita pack will not fit a Bosch tool. Compatibility works across brands only within alliances, such as the Cordless Alliance System, so check the system name first.
What Ah rating should I buy?
It depends on the tool and how long you work. A 2 Ah to 3 Ah pack is light and enough for drilling and driving screws. For grinders, saws and long working days, choose 5 Ah or more and accept the extra weight.
How long does a power tool battery take to charge?
Charging time depends on pack capacity and charger output. A small pack on a rapid charger can be full in well under an hour, while a large pack on a standard charger may need several hours. The charger specification usually gives the time for each battery size.
How do I make a lithium-ion tool battery last longer?
Avoid running it completely flat, and do not leave it in a hot place such as a car in summer. Store it in a cool, dry spot, ideally partly charged if it will sit unused for months. Use a charger approved for that battery system.
