Power tools

Power tools

Our power tools category covers drills and drivers, grinders and sanders, saws, garden machinery, hand tools, measuring tools and accessories for home DIYers, tradespeople and workshops. Brands in our range include Bosch, Makita, Metabo and DeWalt, alongside specialist hand tool makers such as Wera, Knipex and Wiha.

How to choose power tools

Start with the task. A drill driver handles holes and screws in wood, metal and plasterboard, while an angle grinder cuts and grinds metal and stone. Saws, routers and planers each suit a narrower job, so list the work you actually do before comparing models.

Cordless or corded. Cordless tools are easier to carry and use where there is no socket, which suits site work and jobs around the garden. Corded tools deliver steady power without a battery to charge, which makes sense for long sessions with grinders, sanders and saws in a workshop.

Battery platform. Batteries are normally shared between tools of the same brand and voltage, so the first purchase sets the system you will build on. Our range includes batteries and chargers, which is useful if you want a spare pack or need to match an existing tool. Check that a tool is sold with or without a battery before you compare totals.

Motor type and power. Brushless motors usually run cooler, last longer and make better use of the battery than brushed ones. For drills, look at the torque and the chuck size. For grinders, check the disc diameter and motor wattage, since both limit the jobs the tool can do.

Occasional or daily use. Tools for occasional DIY cost less and are lighter, but professional models are built for heavier loads and long working days. Accessories matter as much as the tool itself: good bits, blades and discs give cleaner results and wear out more slowly.

Power tool brands we carry

  • Bosch: sells a blue Professional line for trade use and a green line for home DIY, covering drills, grinders, saws and measuring tools.
  • Makita: known for its 18V cordless system, where one battery fits a large number of drills, saws and garden tools.
  • DeWalt: recognisable by its yellow and black tools, with an 18V range and the higher-voltage FLEXVOLT batteries aimed at heavy work.
  • Metabo: a German manufacturer with a long record in angle grinders and metalworking tools.
  • Einhell: uses its Power X-Change battery system across both workshop tools and garden machinery.
  • Wera: known for Kraftform screwdriver handles and for bits designed to hold screws securely.
  • Wiha: a German screwdriver specialist, with insulated tools for electrical work.
  • Knipex: makes pliers, including adjustable pliers wrenches and cutters for electricians and mechanics.
  • Gedore: a German maker of spanners, sockets and workshop hand tools.
  • 3M: offers abrasives for sanding and finishing, as well as protective equipment.
  • fischer: specialises in wall plugs, anchors and fixings.

Also in our range: KWB. Besides the tools themselves, you will find tool cases and bags, compressors and pneumatic tools, heat and glue guns, and a smaller selection of routers and planers.

Power tools FAQ

Which power tool should I buy first?

A cordless drill driver is the usual first purchase, because it drills holes and drives screws around the home. Add a set of quality bits and a case to keep everything together. Other tools can follow as specific jobs come up.

What is the difference between a drill driver and an impact driver?

A drill driver applies steady rotation and suits drilling and general screwdriving. An impact driver adds short rotational bursts, which helps with long screws and stubborn fasteners. Many people use both on larger projects.

Can I use one battery with different tools?

Yes, within the same brand and battery system. Tools on one platform usually share batteries and chargers, but batteries from different brands generally do not fit each other. Check the voltage and the platform name before you buy.

Are brushless tools worth it?

For regular use, usually yes. A brushless motor wastes less energy as heat, which generally means longer runtime per charge and less wear. For a tool used only a few times a year, a brushed model can be enough.
