How to choose LED strips
Length and power. Measure the run before ordering and allow a little extra for corners and cable routing. The power adapter must match the total length, because longer strips need more wattage and can dim towards the far end.
Colour type. Single-colour white strips are enough for shelves and cabinets, while tunable white lets you switch between warm and cool light. RGB strips add colour for gaming and TV setups, and addressable types can show different colours along the same strip.
Smart control. Some strips come with a simple remote, while others connect through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or a bridge and work with phone apps and voice assistants. Check which ecosystem you already use, since not every strip works with every assistant.
Brightness. Look for lumens per metre rather than colour count. A strip with more LEDs per metre gives smoother light, and the individual dots are less visible when the strip sits behind a diffuser or in an aluminium channel.
Installation and protection. Most strips have an adhesive backing, which holds best on clean, smooth surfaces. For kitchens, bathrooms or outdoor use, look for a stated IP rating. For PC cases, check the voltage and connector type before buying.

LED strips: frequently asked questions
How long an LED strip do I need?
Measure the full path where the strip will run, then add a small allowance for corners and cable routing. Strips are usually sold in set lengths, so choose the nearest length that covers the run. Check that the supplied power adapter is rated for that length.
Can LED strips be cut to size?
Most standard LED strips can be cut, but only at the marked cutting points, which sit between small groups of LEDs. Cutting anywhere else can stop the section working. Some smart strips have limited or no cutting options, so check the product details first.
Do smart LED strips need a hub?
Not always. Many Wi-Fi strips connect straight to your router and are controlled from a phone app, and Bluetooth strips pair directly with your phone. Some systems, such as Philips Hue, use a bridge to unlock the full feature set and to control several lights together.
Can I use an LED strip inside a PC?
Yes, many strips are made for PC cases and plug into a motherboard RGB header or a dedicated controller. Standard RGB headers and addressable RGB headers use different voltages and connectors, so do not mix them. Check which type your motherboard has before choosing a strip.
