Video recorders (NVR/DVR)

Video recorders (NVR/DVR)

This category contains video recorders for security camera systems: network video recorders (NVR) for IP cameras and digital video recorders (DVR) for analogue cameras. They suit homeowners and small businesses that want to keep camera footage on their own premises. Our range is small and currently has recorders from REOLINK and HIKVISION.

How to choose a video recorder (NVR/DVR)

NVR or DVR. An NVR works with IP cameras that connect over a network cable, while a DVR works with analogue cameras on coaxial cable. The recorder must match the cameras you own or plan to buy, so decide on the camera type first. For a new installation, most people choose IP cameras and an NVR.

Number of channels. Each channel supports one camera, and recorders are usually sold with 4, 8, 16 or more channels. Choose a model with a few spare channels so you can add a camera later without replacing the recorder.

Storage. Footage is saved on an internal hard drive, and capacity decides how many days of recordings you can keep. Several cameras recording continuously at high resolution fill a drive quickly, whereas motion-triggered recording stretches it considerably. Some recorders are sold without a drive, so check the product page before you order.

PoE ports and resolution. Many NVRs have built-in Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports that power the cameras through the same cable, which saves buying a separate switch or power adapters. Check the maximum resolution the recorder can handle, because a recorder limited to a lower resolution will not make full use of high-resolution cameras.

Remote viewing. Most modern recorders let you watch live video and play back recordings from a phone app. Look for a recorder whose app is simple to set up, since that decides how often you will actually use it.

Video recorder brands we carry

  • REOLINK: known for PoE security cameras and NVRs that work together and are managed through one app, with a setup aimed at home and small business owners who install the system themselves.
  • HIKVISION: one of the largest video surveillance manufacturers in the world, offering recorders and cameras used in everything from home installations to large commercial sites.

There are no subcategories here, so both recorders are listed together on this page.

Frequently asked questions about NVR and DVR recorders

What is the difference between an NVR and a DVR?

An NVR records video from IP cameras over a network, while a DVR records from analogue cameras connected by coaxial cable. In an NVR system the cameras encode the video themselves, so image quality depends on the cameras. If you are starting from scratch, an NVR with IP cameras is usually the more flexible choice.

How much storage does a security camera recorder need?

It depends on the number of cameras, their resolution and whether they record continuously or only on motion. A single drive can hold weeks of footage from a few cameras on motion recording, but only days of continuous high-resolution recording from many cameras. Most recorders let you replace the drive with a larger one if you need more time.

Can I use cameras from a different brand with my recorder?

Sometimes, but it is not guaranteed. Many IP cameras and recorders support the ONVIF standard, which allows basic compatibility between brands. Some features, such as smart detection alerts, often work only with cameras from the same manufacturer, so check the specifications before mixing brands.

Can I watch my cameras on my phone through a recorder?

Yes, most current NVRs and DVRs offer remote viewing through a phone app. The recorder needs to be connected to your router with a network cable, and you then add it to the app using a QR code or a device ID. A stable home internet connection gives smoother live video.
