Server M.2 SSDs

Server M.2 SSDs

Server M.2 SSDs are enterprise-grade M.2 drives for servers, workstations and NAS units, used mainly as boot drives, cache and fast storage tiers. Our range has over 10 models from Samsung, HP Enterprise, Micron and Synology. They suit IT managers and system builders who need drives built for continuous operation, not desktop use.

How to choose a server M.2 SSD

Physical length. M.2 drives come in different lengths, and server boards often accept only one. Most consumer drives are 2280 (80 mm), while many enterprise models use the longer 22110 (110 mm) format to fit extra capacitors and more NAND. Check the length your motherboard, riser card or NAS slot supports before ordering.

Interface and protocol. M.2 is only the shape of the connector. A drive may use NVMe over PCIe, which is much faster, or SATA, which is slower but still found in some boot-drive setups. Make sure the slot supports the protocol of the drive, and note the PCIe generation, since a drive will run at the speed of the slower of the two.

Endurance and power loss protection. Enterprise drives are rated for how much data can be written over their life, usually given as drive writes per day (DWPD) or terabytes written (TBW). Read-intensive drives are fine for boot volumes and read-heavy caches, while databases and write-heavy caches call for a higher endurance rating. Power loss protection, which lets the drive finish writing data held in volatile memory if power fails, is common on enterprise models and valuable in servers.

Compatibility with your platform. Some vendors validate only their own drives for their servers and NAS systems. If you run a HPE ProLiant, a Lenovo ThinkSystem or a Synology NAS, check whether the drive is on the supported list, as unsupported drives can trigger warnings or lose management features.

Capacity. A boot drive needs little space, so a small capacity is usually enough, often mirrored in a pair. Cache drives and fast storage pools need more room, and higher capacities generally give better sustained write behaviour as well.

Server M.2 SSD brands we carry

  • Samsung: makes its own NAND flash and controllers, and its enterprise NVMe drives are widely used in data centres.
  • HP Enterprise: supplies drives built for its ProLiant servers, where matching the vendor's own parts keeps firmware and monitoring working as expected.
  • Micron: a NAND manufacturer, also the company behind Crucial, with enterprise drives that often include power loss protection.
  • Synology: better known for NAS systems, its M.2 NVMe SSDs are designed for use as cache in Synology devices.

Also in our range: Lenovo.

Server M.2 SSD FAQ

What is the difference between a server M.2 SSD and a consumer M.2 SSD?

A server M.2 SSD is built for continuous operation and heavy workloads. Compared with consumer drives, it usually has higher endurance ratings, more consistent performance under sustained load, and often power loss protection. Consumer drives are tuned for short bursts of activity in a desktop or laptop.

Can I use a server M.2 SSD in a desktop PC?

Yes, if the drive's length and interface match your motherboard slot. Many enterprise M.2 drives use the longer 22110 size, which many desktop boards do not support. Check the slot length and whether it supports NVMe before buying.

Is an M.2 SSD suitable as a boot drive for a server?

Yes, M.2 SSDs are commonly used as boot drives, often as a mirrored pair so the server keeps running if one drive fails. This frees the front drive bays for data storage. Your server must have an M.2 slot or a compatible adapter card, and some servers need a RAID controller for mirroring.

Can I use M.2 SSDs for cache in a Synology NAS?

Yes, many Synology NAS models have M.2 slots for SSD cache, and Synology sells NVMe drives designed for this role. Check your model's specifications to confirm it has M.2 slots and which drive types are supported. Cache drives should have good endurance because they take constant writes.
