Solar power banks

Solar power banks

Solar power banks are portable batteries with a built-in solar panel, used to charge phones, tablets and other USB devices when no mains socket is nearby. They suit hikers, campers, travellers and anyone who wants an emergency backup. Our range of over 10 models includes rugged outdoor units and larger packs from SANDBERG, Xtorm, Boompods and Denver.

How to choose a solar power bank

Battery capacity. A 10000 mAh model typically gives a smartphone a few full charges, while tablets drain it much faster. Our range covers 10000, 16000, 20000 and 24000 mAh, and some models state capacity in watt-hours instead (37 Wh is roughly 10000 mAh, 74 Wh roughly 20000 mAh).

Realistic solar charging. The panel on a power bank is small, so sunlight works as a slow top-up rather than a full recharge. A large battery can need several days of strong sun to fill, so charge it from a USB source before you set off and treat the panel as a back-up.

Weather protection. The IP code shows resistance to dust (first digit) and water (second digit). Our range includes IP65, IP66 and IP67 models for rain and heavy splashing, plus IP44 and IP54 models that only cope with light splashes. Check that port covers are closed and sealed before relying on the rating.

Input and output. Input shows how fast the power bank recharges from a wall adapter, and models in our range accept 5 V, 5/9/12 V or 12 V. Output ranges from 5 V up to 12 V at 1.5 to 5 A, so check the voltage and current your device needs. Most are listed as universal chargers, a few specifically for phones and tablets.

Size and travel rules. Higher capacity means more weight, which matters on a long hike. Most airlines allow power banks under 100 Wh in cabin baggage only, so a 74 Wh unit stays within that limit while larger ones need checking with the airline.

Solar power bank brands we carry

  • SANDBERG: a Danish brand of computer and mobile accessories, and the largest name in this category in our range, with half of the models.
  • Xtorm: a Dutch brand focused on power banks and chargers, including outdoor-oriented solar models.
  • Boompods: a brand known mainly for portable Bluetooth speakers and audio accessories, which also makes outdoor-style power banks.

Also in our range: LogiLink, Denver and SBS.

Solar power banks: frequently asked questions

Do solar power banks really charge from the sun?

Yes, but slowly. The small panel produces only a trickle of power, even in bright sunlight, and the rate drops under cloud or when the panel is angled badly. It is best used to keep a charged battery topped up on a trip, not as the main way to charge it.

How long does a solar power bank take to charge?

Charging by USB cable from a wall adapter is much quicker, usually a matter of hours depending on capacity and input rating. Charging by sunlight alone can take many hours of direct sun spread over several days for larger batteries. A higher input current, such as 3 A in some of our models, shortens the cable recharge time.

What capacity solar power bank do I need?

For a weekend trip with one smartphone, 10000 mAh is usually enough. For several devices, a tablet or a longer trip, 20000 mAh or more gives more margin. Higher capacity also means a heavier unit, so weigh it against how far you will carry it.

Can I take a solar power bank on a plane?

Generally yes, in your hand luggage but not in the hold. Most airlines accept power banks below 100 Wh without special approval, and the Wh figure is printed on many models. Check your airline's rules before flying, particularly for larger capacities.
