USB-C cables

USB-C cables connect phones, laptops, tablets, monitors, docks and external drives, and suit anyone who needs to charge a device, move files or send video through one reversible connector. The main types are USB-C to USB-C cables, USB-C to USB-A cables, USB-C to Lightning cables and video cables for displays.

How to choose a USB-C cable

Purpose. Decide first whether you need charging, data transfer or video. Two cables with identical connectors can behave very differently, because the connector says nothing about what is wired inside.

Power rating. Cables are rated for a maximum wattage, commonly 60 W or 100 W, with newer ones supporting up to 240 W under USB Power Delivery. A phone needs far less than a laptop, so check the wattage of your laptop charger and choose a cable rated at or above it.

Data speed. Many basic cables only run at USB 2.0 speed (480 Mbps), which is fine for charging but slow for files. USB 3.2 cables reach 5, 10 or 20 Gbps, and USB4 and Thunderbolt cables go up to 40 Gbps. For an external SSD, choose a cable rated for at least 10 Gbps.

Video output. Not every USB-C cable carries a picture. To connect a laptop or phone to a monitor, the cable and both devices need to support DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt, so check the specifications of all three.

Length and build. Short cables of 0.5 to 1 m hold their rated speed best, while longer ones can lose data speed unless they are built for it. A braided jacket and reinforced connector ends help if the cable is bent and plugged in daily.

Cable types and brands

  • USB-C to USB-C: the standard choice for modern laptops, tablets, phones and docks, and the only type that can carry the highest charging wattages.
  • USB-C to USB-A: connects a USB-C device to older chargers, computers and car sockets, usually at lower power and speed.
  • USB-C to Lightning: charges and syncs iPhones and some iPads from a USB-C charger or laptop.
  • USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort: sends video from a compatible laptop or phone to a screen or projector.

Brands differ in how clearly they print wattage and speed ratings, so compare those figures on each product page rather than relying on the name alone.

USB-C cables FAQ

Can I charge my laptop with any USB-C cable?

Not always. A laptop that needs 65 W or more will charge slowly or not at all on a cable rated for 15 W or 60 W that is too low for it. Match the cable's wattage rating to your laptop charger, and use a cable that supports USB Power Delivery.

What is the difference between a USB-C charging cable and a data cable?

A charging cable is built mainly to carry power and often transfers data only at USB 2.0 speed. A data cable has extra wiring for faster transfers, such as 10 or 40 Gbps. Many cables do both, but the rating on the packaging tells you which.

Does a USB-C cable support video output?

Only some do. Video needs DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt, and it must be supported by the cable, the source device and the screen. A plain charging cable will not send a picture to a monitor.

Does a longer USB-C cable charge or transfer more slowly?

It can, particularly for data. Longer passive cables often cannot keep the highest speeds, such as 40 Gbps, so those are usually limited to short lengths. For charging, a well-made longer cable works fine as long as its wattage rating suits your device.
