USB sound cards and amplifiers

USB sound cards and amplifiers

This category brings together USB sound cards and audio amplifiers that add or improve audio connections on a PC, laptop or mini PC through a single USB port. They suit anyone whose built-in audio has failed, lacks a socket or picks up electrical noise. Brands in our range include INLINE, LogiLink and Micro Connect.

How to choose a USB sound card or amplifier

Connections you need. Check which sockets the device actually offers. A basic adapter has a 3.5 mm headphone output and a microphone input, while other models add optical S/PDIF, RCA or several 3.5 mm outputs for speaker setups. Match this to your headset, speakers or hi-fi equipment before anything else.

Sound quality specifications. Look at bit depth and sample rate, for example 16-bit or 24-bit and 48 kHz, 96 kHz or 192 kHz. Higher values matter mainly for music playback and recording, whereas for calls and general video watching a standard 16-bit or 24-bit adapter is enough.

Headphone drive strength. Low-impedance earphones work with almost any adapter. Studio-style headphones with high impedance need an amplifier with more output power, otherwise they sound quiet and thin at full volume. Check the impedance range stated in the product specification.

Plug and play or drivers. Many simple USB audio adapters are recognised automatically by Windows, macOS and Linux. Models with extra features such as surround processing may require a driver, so confirm that your operating system is supported.

USB connector and size. Most devices use USB-A, but newer laptops often have only USB-C, so you may need an adapter or a USB-C model. A small dongle plugs straight into the port, while a desktop unit with a cable keeps the headphone socket within easy reach and is less likely to strain the port.

USB sound card and amplifier brands we carry

  • INLINE: a German brand of cables, adapters and PC accessories, known for a large catalogue of connectivity products that includes USB audio adapters.
  • LogiLink: a brand of affordable IT peripherals and adapters, often chosen for simple USB audio solutions that restore sound to a computer without much setup.

Also in our range: Micro Connect.

USB sound cards and amplifiers: frequently asked questions

Do I need a USB sound card?

You need one if your computer has no audio output, the built-in socket is damaged, or you want extra connections such as a separate microphone input. It is also a quick fix for buzzing or interference from a motherboard that sits close to other components. If your current audio works well, you will gain little.

Does a USB sound card improve sound quality?

It can, mainly by moving audio conversion outside the computer, where there is less electrical interference. The improvement is most noticeable if the built-in audio is noisy or low quality. With a good onboard chip and ordinary headphones, the difference may be small.

Do USB sound cards need drivers?

Most basic models do not, because modern operating systems include generic USB audio support. Plug the device in and select it as the output in your sound settings. Models with surround modes or equaliser software may need a driver from the manufacturer.

Can a USB amplifier power high-impedance headphones?

Only if its output is strong enough for them. A simple USB adapter is designed for earphones and headsets, and it may give weak volume with headphones rated at 250 ohms or more. For those, choose a dedicated headphone amplifier and check the impedance range in its specification.
