How to choose a cable set or kit
Power supply compatibility. Check this first. Modular PSU connectors are not standardised between manufacturers, and sometimes not even between series from the same maker, so a replacement cable must be made for your exact PSU model or pinout. Extension kits are different: they plug into the cables already attached to the PSU, so they work with a much wider choice of power supplies.
Which connectors are included. A full kit usually contains a 24-pin motherboard cable, one or two 8-pin CPU (EPS) cables and several PCIe cables for the graphics card. If you have a recent high-end graphics card, check whether it needs a 12VHPWR or 12V-2x6 connector and whether the kit has one. Buying only the cables you use is often enough.
Length and case size. Cables that are too short strain the connectors, while very long ones are hard to hide. A mini-ITX case needs shorter runs than a full tower, where the PSU may sit far from the motherboard. Measure the route behind the motherboard tray before you order.
Sleeving, colour and combs. Sleeved cables mainly change appearance, and they can make cable routing neater because they are often flatter or more uniform than standard ones. Cable combs keep the wires parallel and are mostly cosmetic. Pick a colour that matches your fans, memory or case lighting, or go for black if you want the cables to disappear.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use cables from one brand on another power supply?
Not safely, unless the cable is made for that PSU. Pin layouts on the modular end can differ between brands and even between models, and a wrong match can damage components. Extension cables that connect to the standard 24-pin, EPS or PCIe plug on your existing cable are a safer way to change the look.
Do cable extension kits improve performance?
No. Extension kits change how the inside of the PC looks and make routing easier, but they do not make the computer faster or the power supply more efficient. Every extra connector adds a small amount of resistance, so a kit is a cosmetic choice, not a performance upgrade.
What is included in a typical PSU cable kit?

How do I know which length I need?
