Power strips with USB

Power strips with USB combine several mains sockets with built-in USB charging ports, so one wall outlet can run a desk setup and charge phones at the same time. The range is small and currently features a Belkin model, a brand known for surge protectors and charging accessories. It suits home offices, student desks and bedside tables.

How to choose a power strip with USB

Number and spacing of sockets. Count the devices you plug in and allow two spare sockets. Bulky power adapters can block the socket next to them, so wide spacing matters as much as the socket count.

Type of USB ports. USB-C suits current phones, tablets and some laptops, while USB-A still serves older chargers, earbuds and small accessories. Check whether the stated USB output is per port or shared, because a shared total is split when several devices charge together.

Surge protection. Power often returns with a spike after an outage, and a strip with surge protection absorbs part of it. Look for a protection rating in joules, where a higher figure means more absorption. Remember that a surge protector does not keep devices running during load shedding, which needs a UPS or a power bank.

Cable length and plug. Measure the distance from the wall socket to where the strip will sit. A cable of around 1.5 to 2 metres is common, and a longer one avoids the need for an extension lead. Make sure the plug suits South African wall sockets, as some imported strips need an adapter.

Total load rating. Every strip has a maximum current or wattage. Computers, monitors, routers and chargers sit comfortably within it, but kettles, heaters and similar appliances should go straight into the wall.

Power strip brands in our range

  • Belkin: an American company best known for surge protectors and charging accessories for phones, tablets and laptops, which makes it a familiar name for desk power solutions.

Belkin is the only brand in this category at the moment. For related items, the neighbouring USB and Thunderbolt cables category covers cables for connecting and charging devices.

Power strips with USB: frequently asked questions

What is a power strip with USB?

A power strip with USB is a multi-socket extension that also has USB ports for charging small devices. It lets you charge a phone or tablet without a separate wall adapter. The mains sockets still power items such as monitors, lamps and chargers.

Can a power strip with USB charge a laptop?

Only if it has a USB-C port with enough output for your laptop. Many USB ports on power strips are designed for phones and accessories, and they deliver too little power for a laptop. Compare the port's wattage with the figure on your laptop's original charger.

Does a power strip with USB protect against power surges?

Not every model does. Some are simple extension strips, while others include surge protection. Check the product specification for a surge protection rating before relying on it to protect a computer or TV.

Can I plug one power strip into another?

It is best not to. Chaining strips can overload the first one and the wall socket, and it hides how much total load you are drawing. Plug the strip straight into the wall and keep the combined load within its stated rating.
