Thermal imaging cameras

Thermal imaging cameras

This category contains thermal imaging cameras that show heat differences the eye cannot see, which suits electricians, building inspectors, maintenance teams and security installers. Models from FLIR, Seek Thermal and Hikvision are in our range, with more than ten models spanning entry-level to professional use.

How to choose a thermal imaging camera

Thermal resolution. The detector resolution decides how much detail you see and how small a target you can measure accurately from a distance. Low-resolution detectors are fine for close checks such as fuse boards and sockets, while 320 x 240 pixels or more is the usual choice for roof surveys, building envelope work and inspecting equipment from a safe distance.

Temperature range and accuracy. Make sure the measurement range covers the hottest and coldest surfaces you will inspect. Electrical and industrial work needs a higher upper limit than damp or insulation checks, and many professional cameras quote accuracy of around 2 °C or 2 percent of the reading.

Thermal sensitivity. This is often listed as NETD in millikelvin, and a lower figure means the camera can separate smaller temperature differences. It matters most when you are looking for faint air leaks, missing insulation or early signs of moisture.

Form and features. Handheld cameras with a built-in screen, a visible-light camera for image overlay and internal storage are the most practical for inspections that end in a report. Models designed for security and monitoring work differently, so check whether the camera is meant to be carried or mounted, and which software it uses for reports and analysis.

Thermal imaging camera brands we carry

  • FLIR: one of the best-known names in thermal imaging, with a long history of handheld inspection cameras used by electricians, building surveyors and maintenance teams. Most of the models in our range carry this brand.
  • Seek Thermal: known for compact thermal imagers that are aimed at affordable, portable use, including cameras designed to work with smartphones.
  • Hikvision: a major video surveillance manufacturer that also makes thermal cameras, so it is a natural fit if you already use its security equipment.

Thermal imaging camera FAQ

What is a thermal imaging camera used for?

A thermal imaging camera is used to find temperature differences on surfaces without touching them. Common jobs include spotting overheating electrical connections, locating heat loss and damp in buildings, checking motors and bearings, and detecting people or objects in low light.

Can a thermal camera see through walls?

No, a thermal camera cannot see through walls. It reads the temperature of the surface in front of it. It can still reveal what is behind a wall indirectly, because hot pipes, missing insulation or moisture change the surface temperature.

Do thermal imaging cameras work in the dark?

Yes, they work in complete darkness. They detect infrared heat rather than visible light, so they need no lighting. Heavy rain, fog and glass can reduce what they pick up, since glass blocks most thermal radiation.

What resolution do I need?

It depends on how far away your targets are and how small they are. Lower resolutions are enough for close-up electrical checks, while higher resolutions such as 320 x 240 pixels give clearer detail and more reliable readings on small or distant objects. If you are unsure, choose the higher resolution that fits your budget.
