Ultrawide and curved monitors

Ultrawide and curved monitors

Ultrawide and curved monitors for home and office use give you a much wider screen than a standard 16:9 display, often with a gentle curve so the edges stay comfortably in view. Our range currently features a 34-inch UltraWide Quad HD model from MSI, which suits gamers, editors and anyone who wants two documents open side by side.

How to choose an ultrawide or curved monitor

Screen size and resolution. A 34-inch ultrawide is a common size for desk work, as it roughly replaces two smaller monitors without a bezel in the middle. Our range includes a 86.4 cm (34") screen with UltraWide Quad HD resolution, which is usually 3440 x 1440 pixels. That keeps text and images sharp at this width, with a pixel pitch of about 0.23 mm.

Refresh rate and response time. Refresh rate matters most for games and fast video. A 120 Hz panel, as in our range, looks noticeably smoother than a 60 Hz office screen when you move the mouse or play. Response time of 4 ms is reasonable for casual and mid-level gaming, while spreadsheets and documents are unaffected by it.

Curvature and panel contrast. A curve reduces the distance your eyes travel to the edges of a wide screen, which is helpful at normal desk distance. The 3500:1 typical contrast ratio listed in our range is higher than that of most IPS panels, so dark scenes in films and games look deeper. Many curved monitors use VA panels for this reason, though viewing angles are usually narrower than on IPS.

Desk space and connections. An ultrawide is wider than it looks in photos, so measure your desk and check that the stand fits. Make sure your computer has a matching video output, such as HDMI or DisplayPort, that can drive the resolution at the refresh rate you want. Also check the stand's height and tilt adjustment before buying.

Ultrawide and curved monitor FAQ

What is an ultrawide monitor?

An ultrawide monitor is a display with a much wider aspect ratio than a standard 16:9 screen, most often 21:9. The extra width gives you more room for side-by-side windows, long timelines in video editing or a wider field of view in games. A 34-inch model is a typical size.

What does UltraWide Quad HD mean?

UltraWide Quad HD describes a wide screen with a resolution higher than Full HD, usually 3440 x 1440 pixels. It has the same height in pixels as a standard Quad HD monitor but is wider. This gives sharper detail than UltraWide Full HD without needing as much graphics power as 4K.

Is a curved monitor better for work?

A curved monitor can be more comfortable on a wide screen, because the edges sit closer to your eyes and need less head movement. On a 34-inch ultrawide the curve is usually gentle. If you do precise layout work with straight lines, a flat screen may feel more natural, though many people adapt quickly.

Is 120 Hz enough for gaming on an ultrawide?

Yes, 120 Hz is enough for most gaming and is twice the refresh rate of a standard office monitor. At UltraWide Quad HD resolution your graphics card also has to push more pixels than at Full HD, so reaching 120 frames per second depends on the game and your hardware. For everyday office use, 120 Hz simply makes scrolling and cursor movement look smoother.
