Unmanaged switches

Unmanaged switches

Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play network switches for homes, small offices, workshops and server cabinets that need more Ethernet ports without any configuration. Our range covers desktop models with 5 or 8 ports and rack-mount switches with 16, 24 or 48 ports, from brands such as TP-Link, D-Link, LevelOne and Digitus.

There are over 100 models to compare.

How to choose an unmanaged switch

Port speed. Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000) is the sensible default today and is the most common type in our range. Fast Ethernet (10/100) switches are still sold and suit older devices such as IP phones or basic cameras, but they will limit file transfers to and from a NAS or PC. A small number of models offer 2.5G ports for faster wired links.

Number of ports. Count every device you will connect now, then add a few spare ports. Our range includes 4, 5, 8, 16, 24 and 48 port models: 5 and 8 port switches are typical for a desk or living room, while 24 and 48 port models are built for patch panels and racks. Remember that one port is often used for the uplink to your router.

Power over Ethernet. Some unmanaged switches supply power through the network cable to IP cameras, wireless access points and VoIP phones. If you plan to connect such devices, choose a PoE model and check its total power budget, not only the number of PoE ports.

MAC address table size. This is the number of devices the switch can remember at once. Many models in our range list 8000 entries, and others range from 1000 to 16000. A small home network will never come close to the limit, but a larger office with many computers, phones and virtual machines benefits from a bigger table.

Operating conditions. Most switches in our range are rated for roughly 0 to 40 °C, which suits a heated office or cabinet. For unheated outbuildings, workshops or enclosures with poor airflow, look for a wider temperature rating. A few models are specified from -40 to 75 °C.

Unmanaged switch brands we carry

  • TP-Link: the largest group in our range, known for affordable Gigabit desktop switches that suit home and small office networks.
  • D-Link: a long-established networking brand offering both compact desktop switches and rack-mount models for small businesses.
  • Cisco: best known for enterprise networking, with switches aimed at business installations.
  • Zyxel: focuses on business networking and is often chosen for small and medium-sized offices.
  • Netgear: known for home and small business networking equipment, including simple plug-and-play Gigabit switches.
  • Digitus and Lanberg: both are known for network cabling and accessories, so their switches are practical when you are building a structured cabling setup.
  • Planet: a Taiwanese manufacturer known for PoE and industrial networking equipment.
  • Hikvision: a video surveillance specialist, so its switches are commonly paired with IP camera systems.

Also in our range: LevelOne, Tenda and Edimax.

Unmanaged switches: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a managed and an unmanaged switch?

An unmanaged switch works straight out of the box and cannot be configured, while a managed switch lets you set up VLANs, traffic priorities and monitoring. For a home or small office network, an unmanaged switch is usually enough and is simpler to run. Choose a managed model only if you need to separate or control traffic.

How many ports do I need on a switch?

Count the wired devices you have now and add about a quarter more for future needs. A 5 or 8 port switch covers most homes and small desks, while 16, 24 or 48 ports are used in offices and racks. One port will normally connect the switch to your router.

Is a Gigabit switch worth it over Fast Ethernet?

Yes, in most cases. Gigabit Ethernet is ten times faster than Fast Ethernet, which makes a clear difference with NAS drives, backups and modern PCs. Fast Ethernet is only enough for light devices such as older printers or basic IP phones.

Do I need to configure an unmanaged switch?

No, you only plug in the power and connect the network cables. The switch learns which device is on which port automatically. It will not slow your network as long as its port speed and uplink match your router and the devices you connect.
