Server and OEM power supplies

Server and OEM power supplies

Server and OEM power supplies are replacement and spare units for branded servers, workstations and network equipment, mostly hot-swap redundant modules. They suit IT teams, resellers and workshops that need to restore or add redundancy in hardware from DELL, Cisco, Lenovo, FSP Group and HP.

Each unit is built for a specific chassis, so these are not interchangeable with standard ATX supplies.

How to choose a server or OEM power supply

Match the part number. Check the model number on the label of the unit you are replacing and look for the same one, or a part number the manufacturer lists as compatible. Two supplies with the same wattage can still differ in connector layout, latch position and housing, and may not fit the bay.

Check the wattage. Use the rating of the original module as the minimum. A higher-rated module is sometimes supported, but the server documentation should confirm it before you mix ratings.

Plan for redundancy. Most rack servers take two hot-swap modules, so one can fail without taking the server down. Fit two matching units, because mixed models in one chassis can trigger warnings or be rejected by the system.

Look at the efficiency rating. Supplies with 80 Plus Platinum or Titanium ratings waste less energy as heat, which matters in a rack that runs around the clock. Make sure the efficiency class is also compatible with the server you are fitting it to.

Confirm airflow and input type. Network switches in particular use modules with a set airflow direction, front to back or back to front, and it should match your rack layout. Also check that the input is AC or DC as your power feed requires.

Brands in our range

  • DELL: the largest group in our range, covering power supplies for PowerEdge rack and tower servers, which are widely used in business data rooms.
  • Cisco: modules for Cisco network equipment and UCS servers, where airflow direction and chassis compatibility matter.
  • Lenovo: supplies for ThinkSystem servers and related business hardware, usually in hot-swap form.
  • FSP Group: a power supply manufacturer that builds OEM and server units for other brands as well as under its own name.
  • HP: known for business desktops and workstations, whose proprietary supplies generally need an exact part number match.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a server power supply in a normal PC?

Generally no, not without adaptation. Server modules have proprietary shapes and connectors and often depend on a backplane or a specific chassis. A standard ATX supply is the simpler choice for a desktop build.

What does hot-swap mean on a power supply?

Hot-swap means the module can be removed and replaced while the server is running. This works because the other supply in a redundant pair carries the load meanwhile. It lets you replace a failed unit without scheduling downtime.

How do I find the right replacement power supply?

Start with the part number printed on the label of the existing unit, then compare it with the server or switch model it must fit. Check the wattage, the airflow direction where relevant, and the input type. If the label is unreadable, the model documentation from the manufacturer lists the supported modules.

Do I need to replace both power supplies in a redundant server?

Not necessarily. If one module has failed, replacing that one with an identical model restores redundancy. Using the same model in both bays is the safest approach, as mismatched units can cause alerts or unequal load sharing.
