Server power supplies

Server power supplies

Server power supplies are replacement and spare units for rack servers and network equipment, suited to IT administrators, resellers and businesses that need to keep infrastructure running. Our range covers hot-plug server modules and switch power units from HPE, NETGEAR, HP and Cisco, with rated outputs from 75 W to 1200 W.

How to choose a server power supply

Compatibility. Match the unit to the exact server or switch model. Server power supplies are usually built for a specific chassis, with their own form factor and connector, so check the part or option number in the documentation or on the label of the unit you are replacing.

Wattage. Size the unit to the fully loaded configuration, not just the base machine. Rated outputs in our range include 75 W, 350 W, 550 W, 600 W, 920 W and 1200 W. Extra drives, memory and expansion cards raise demand, so leave some headroom, but a unit far larger than needed tends to run at lower efficiency.

Redundancy and hot-plug. Many servers take two power supplies so that one can fail without taking the system down. In a redundant pair, each unit should be able to carry the full load alone. Hot-plug models can be swapped while the server is running, but only if the chassis supports it.

Input voltage. The units in our range with a listed input rating accept 100 to 240 V AC, or 110 to 240 V AC, so they work on standard South African mains. Also check the power cord type, as the inlet on the supply must match the cable or the rack power distribution unit you use.

Efficiency rating. A server often runs around the clock, so the 80 Plus level (Bronze up to Titanium) affects both electricity use and the heat released into the rack. Higher ratings matter most where cooling is limited.

Server power supply brands we carry

  • HPE, HP Enterprise and HP: Hewlett Packard Enterprise builds the ProLiant server line, and its hot-plug power supplies are made for those chassis and are often fitted in redundant pairs.
  • NETGEAR: known for network switches, with power units that suit its switch chassis rather than general-purpose servers.
  • Cisco: a major maker of enterprise switches, routers and servers, so its power supplies suit network cabinets and data centre racks.
  • Supermicro: a server and motherboard manufacturer whose power supplies are designed around its own rackmount chassis.

Also in our range: TP-Link.

Server power supply FAQ

What is the difference between a server power supply and a desktop one?

A server power supply is built for continuous operation and usually fits a specific chassis, often as a hot-plug module. A desktop unit is a standard-size box with loose cables for a single computer. Server units commonly support redundant pairs, which desktop units do not.

Can I use any server power supply in my server?

No, the unit should be listed as compatible with your server model. Differences in size, connector and power management mean a unit from another series may not fit or may not be recognised. Check the part number against your server documentation before ordering.

How many watts does my server need?

It depends on the processors, memory, drives and expansion cards installed. Add up the loaded draw of the components, or use the manufacturer's power calculator for your model, then choose a unit with some headroom. In a redundant setup, one supply must handle the full load by itself.

Do I need two power supplies in a server?

Two are recommended when downtime is costly, because the server keeps running if one unit or one power feed fails. A single supply is acceptable for test machines or non-critical systems. Check that your server has a second bay and supports redundant operation.
