How to choose a robomower
Lawn size and shape. Every robomower is rated for a maximum lawn area, so start by measuring your garden. Choose a model rated for somewhat more than your actual lawn, especially if the grass is split into several zones by paths, flower beds or narrow gaps.
Boundary method. Older designs rely on a boundary wire buried or pegged around the lawn. Newer models use satellite positioning (RTK) or cameras to create a virtual boundary in an app, which saves the installation work but needs a reasonably clear view of the sky or good visual references. Check which method a model uses before buying, as it decides how much setup the garden needs.
Slopes and terrain. The maximum slope a mower can climb is given as a percentage in the specifications. Lawns with steep banks, soft ground or uneven patches call for stronger traction, and some models use all-wheel drive for this. A flat, open lawn does not need it.
Cutting settings and obstacle handling. Look at the cutting height range, the cutting width and how the mower detects obstacles. Models with cameras or radar can steer around toys, hedges and garden furniture, while simpler bump sensors rely on contact. Features such as rain detection, a PIN code and anti-theft alarms are worth having for a mower that stays outdoors.
App and smart features. Most current robomowers are controlled through a phone app for scheduling, zones and no-go areas. If you already use a smart home system, check which assistants a model supports.

Robomower FAQ
Do robot mowers need a boundary wire?
Not all of them do. Traditional models need a boundary wire laid around the lawn, while newer wire-free models use satellite positioning or cameras and let you draw the boundary in an app. Wire-free setup is quicker, but it works best where the sky is fairly open.
How big a lawn can a robot mower cut?
It depends on the model, and the manufacturer states a maximum area for each one. Small units suit modest gardens, while larger models are built for much bigger lawns. Pick one rated above your lawn size so it can finish the job within its scheduled hours.
Can a robot mower handle slopes?
Many can, but the limit varies by model. The maximum climbing gradient is listed in the specifications as a percentage. For steep or uneven lawns, look for stronger drive systems such as all-wheel drive rather than a basic two-wheel design.
Can a robot mower be left outside in the rain?
Most robomowers are designed to live outdoors and are water resistant, and many pause or return to the dock when rain is detected. Cutting wet grass gives a poorer finish, so a rain sensor and a schedule are useful. Always check the model's ingress protection rating and whether it should be stored indoors in winter.
