Drive backplanes and bays

Drive backplanes and bays cover the parts that let several storage drives connect to a server, workstation or rack chassis: backplane boards, hot-swap drive cages and front-panel bays. They suit anyone adding storage to a case or building a multi-drive system. No brands are listed for this category at the moment, so fit with your chassis and drive type matters more than the name on the box.

How to choose a drive backplane or bay

Drive size and count. Check whether you need 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch slots and how many drives must fit. Many bays take both sizes with the right tray, but a bay built for 2.5-inch drives will not hold a 3.5-inch hard disk.

Interface. SATA, SAS and NVMe backplanes are not interchangeable. A SATA backplane works with ordinary SATA ports, SAS needs a suitable controller or host bus adapter, and NVMe needs PCIe lanes and the matching cables or connectors on the mainboard.

Hot-swap support. Hot-swap trays let you replace a failed drive without shutting the system down, which matters for servers and RAID arrays. For a home workstation where you rarely change drives, a simpler fixed cage is usually enough.

Chassis fit. Measure the free front bays (5.25-inch or 3.5-inch) or confirm the backplane is made for your server case. A cage that converts three 5.25-inch bays into several drive slots only works if those bays are free and the depth behind them allows for cables.

Cooling and noise. Packing drives tightly raises temperatures, so look for a bay with airflow through the trays or a fan. Small fans can be loud, so consider fan speed if the machine sits in a quiet room.

Brands and product types

  • Backplanes: circuit boards that sit behind the drive slots and pass data and power to each drive through a few cables instead of one cable per drive.
  • Hot-swap drive cages: removable trays in a metal or plastic frame, designed so a drive can be pulled out from the front of the case.
  • Internal drive bays and adapters: brackets and bays that fit 2.5-inch drives into 3.5-inch slots or add extra drives to spare case space.

Brand information for this category is not listed at the moment, so check the manufacturer and model on each product page and compare it with your case and controller before ordering.

Frequently asked questions about drive backplanes and bays

What is a drive backplane?

A drive backplane is a circuit board that connects several drives to a system through shared data and power connections. Drives slide into slots and plug straight into the board, so there is no separate cable run to each one. Servers and storage chassis use them widely because they make drive changes quicker and cabling tidier.

Can I use SATA drives in a SAS backplane?

In most cases, yes. SAS backplanes and controllers are generally designed to accept SATA drives as well. The reverse does not work: a SAS drive will not run on a SATA-only backplane or controller. Always check the specifications of the backplane and the controller.

Do I need a hot-swap bay?

You only need a hot-swap bay if you want to replace drives while the system is running. This is common in servers, NAS builds and RAID setups where downtime is a problem. For a desktop PC with a couple of drives, standard internal mounting is normally enough.

How do I know a backplane will fit my case?

Compare the backplane's form factor and mounting layout with your case documentation. For a bay that sits in the front, count the free 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch slots and check the space behind them for cables. For a server chassis, look for a backplane made for that specific model, because the mounting points and connector positions vary between designs.
