Power supplies 700–950 W

Power supplies 700–950 W

This category covers PC power supplies rated between 700 and 950 W, mostly 750 W and 850 W units, for gaming PCs, workstations and builds with a power-hungry graphics card. Models in our range come from CHIEFTEC, GAMEMAX, DEEPCOOL and CORSAIR, with fully modular, semi-modular and non-modular cabling.

How to choose a power supply of 700 to 950 W

Wattage. Add up the draw of the graphics card and processor, then leave headroom for load spikes and future upgrades. Our range centres on 750 W and 850 W, with some 700 W and 800 W units. A 750 W model covers many mid-range gaming builds, while 850 W gives more margin for a high-end graphics card.

Cabling. Fully modular units let you attach only the cables you need, which keeps the case tidier and helps airflow. Non-modular models have every cable fixed and suit simple builds in roomy cases. Semi-modular units usually fix the main motherboard cable and make the rest removable.

Connectors. Count what your parts need before you buy. The PCI Express power connectors (6+2 pin) in our range run from one to six, and a graphics card with three 8-pin inputs needs a unit that offers enough of them. SATA connectors range from three to eight and Molex connectors from one to four, which matters if you run several drives or fans.

Efficiency and protection. An 80 Plus rating (Bronze, Gold, Platinum and so on) tells you how efficiently the unit converts mains power. A higher rating means less energy lost as heat, which usually means a cooler and quieter unit. Check the specifications for overvoltage, overcurrent and short-circuit protection.

Fan size and mains input. Most units in our range have a 12 cm fan, and some use 13.5 cm or 14 cm fans, which can spin more slowly for the same airflow. South African mains is 230 V, and the input ranges listed here, mostly 100 to 240 V, all cover it.

Power supply brands we carry

  • CHIEFTEC: a long-established Taiwanese maker of power supplies and PC cases, with the largest number of models in this power range.
  • DEEPCOOL: best known for CPU coolers and cases, and it applies that cooling experience to its power supplies.
  • CORSAIR: known for its RM and HX series, which are popular for fully modular cabling.
  • ASUS: offers power supplies under its ROG and TUF Gaming lines, designed to match its gaming components.
  • MSI: sells power supplies in its MPG and MAG series alongside its motherboards and graphics cards.
  • LIAN LI: a maker of aluminium PC cases, whose power supplies suit builds in its own cases.
  • ADATA: mainly known for memory and SSDs, and sells power supplies under its XPG gaming brand.

Also in our range: GAMEMAX, GIGABYTE, ASRock, TACENS and MONTECH.

Power supply FAQ

Is a 750 W power supply enough for a gaming PC?

Yes, a 750 W power supply is enough for many gaming PCs, particularly those with a mid-range graphics card and a mainstream processor. Check the graphics card manufacturer's recommended power supply rating. For a high-end card or a heavily overclocked processor, 850 W gives more margin.

Is a fully modular power supply worth it?

A fully modular power supply is worth it if you care about tidy cabling and airflow, or if you build in a small case. You connect only the cables you use, so there is less clutter. It does not change electrical performance, so a non-modular unit works just as well in a spacious case.

Will a high-wattage power supply use more electricity?

No, a power supply only delivers the power your components ask for. An 850 W unit in a PC drawing 300 W supplies about 300 W, plus a small conversion loss. Efficiency is usually best at medium load, so an oversized unit can be slightly less efficient at very light load.

How many PCIe power connectors do I need?

You need as many PCI Express power connectors as your graphics card has power inputs. Mid-range cards usually need one or two 8-pin connectors, while high-end cards may need three or a 16-pin cable. Check the card's specifications and make sure the power supply includes the right cables.
