Webcams

Webcams are USB cameras that add video to a laptop or desktop PC for calls, online meetings, lessons and streaming. This category suits home workers, small meeting rooms and anyone whose built-in laptop camera looks grainy. Typical types are Full HD webcams, 4K models and conference cameras with wide-angle lenses and built-in speakerphones.

How to choose a webcam

Resolution. Full HD (1080p) is enough for most video calls and is sharper than many built-in laptop cameras. 4K helps if you record content or want to crop into the picture, but video call software often compresses the image, so the gain is smaller than the spec suggests.

Field of view. A narrow view of around 65 to 78 degrees frames one person at a desk. A wide view of 90 degrees or more fits several people around a table, which matters in a small meeting room.

Focus and low-light performance. Autofocus keeps you sharp when you lean in or hold up a document. A larger sensor and a wider aperture cope better with dim rooms, where cheaper webcams produce noisy, soft images.

Microphone and speaker. Many webcams include one or two microphones, which is fine for a quiet home office. For a shared room, a conference camera with a speakerphone picks up voices at a distance and avoids the need for a separate device.

Mounting and connection. Check that the clip fits your monitor or that there is a tripod thread for a stand. Most webcams connect over USB and work without drivers on Windows and macOS, but confirm this, along with the cable length, before you buy.

Webcam brands: what to look for

  • Dedicated webcam makers: companies that focus on PC cameras usually offer a clear step-up from basic to higher-end models, with software for adjusting exposure and framing.
  • Conference system specialists: these brands build all-in-one video bars and speakerphone cameras designed for shared rooms, often with wide lenses and room-filling audio.
  • Computer and peripheral brands: general electronics makers tend to sell simple plug-and-play webcams for everyday calls at the entry level.

Whichever brand you choose, check the stated resolution, frame rate and operating system support on the product page rather than relying on the name alone.

Webcam FAQ

Do I need a webcam if my laptop already has one?

Not always, but an external webcam is worth considering if your laptop camera looks dark or grainy. External models usually have better sensors and lenses, and you can place them at eye level on a monitor. They also suit desktop PCs, which normally have no camera at all.

What resolution webcam do I need for video calls?

Full HD (1080p) is enough for most video calls and meetings. 720p works for basic use but looks soft on a large screen. 4K is only worthwhile if you record or stream and your software supports it.

Do webcams work without installing drivers?

Most USB webcams work as soon as they are plugged in on Windows and macOS, because they use standard video class drivers. Extra software is usually optional and used for settings such as zoom, colour and framing. Check the product page if you use an older system or Linux.

Which webcam is best for a meeting room?

A conference camera with a wide field of view and a built-in speakerphone is the usual choice for a meeting room. It captures everyone around the table and picks up voices at a distance. For a single person at a desk, a standard Full HD webcam is enough.
