Scan engines and modules

Scan engines and modules

Scan engines and modules are the barcode reading components that manufacturers and integrators build into their own equipment, rather than complete scanners you hold in your hand. They suit kiosks, lockers, vending machines, access points and custom-built devices. Our range currently features a Zebra model, a brand with a long record in industrial barcode scanning.

Because these parts are designed for integration, the right choice depends on the device that will house them.

How to choose a scan engine or module

Barcode types. Decide first whether you need to read only linear 1D codes or also 2D codes such as QR and Data Matrix. A 2D imager reads both, and it also copes with codes shown on phone screens, which matters for ticketing, access control and loyalty schemes.

Reading distance and field of view. Check the working range and the width of the scanning area against how the code will be presented. A kiosk where users hold a code a few centimetres from the window needs a different engine from one that reads labels on a shelf or a conveyor.

Interface and connection. The engine must talk to your host board. Common options are USB, UART (serial) and RS-232, and the connector type and voltage must match your design. Confirm this before ordering, because it is the most frequent cause of integration delays.

Size and mounting. Measure the space behind the scan window and check the engine's dimensions, fixing points and window material requirements. Some engines need a specific window angle or coating to avoid reflections that reduce read rates.

Lighting and decode software. Look at how the engine handles bright sunlight, glossy labels and low contrast prints. Check whether decoding happens inside the module or on your host, and whether the manufacturer provides a development kit, documentation and configuration tools.

Brands we carry

  • Zebra: an established name in enterprise barcode scanning, mobile computers and printers, which also supplies OEM scan engines for integration into other manufacturers' equipment.

The category currently holds one Zebra model, so there are no further subcategories or brand groups to browse.

Scan engines and modules: frequently asked questions

What is a scan engine?

A scan engine is the core barcode reading unit, usually a small module containing the optics, illumination and decoder, without a housing or handle. Manufacturers install it inside their own products. It sends the decoded barcode data to the host device over an interface such as USB or serial.

What is the difference between a scan engine and a barcode scanner?

A barcode scanner is a finished product with a case, trigger or stand and a ready-to-use cable, while a scan engine is a component for building into something else. A scanner can be plugged in and used straight away. An engine needs to be integrated, powered and configured by the person building the device.

Should I choose a 1D or 2D scan engine?

Choose a 2D engine if you may need to read QR codes, Data Matrix codes or barcodes on screens, since it also reads standard 1D codes. A 1D engine is enough only when you will scan simple linear labels and nothing else. Consider future needs before deciding, as changing the engine later means reworking the device.

Can I use a scan engine without technical knowledge?

A scan engine is generally intended for engineers, integrators and developers, as it requires wiring, host communication and often configuration. If you only need to scan barcodes at a desk or counter, a complete barcode scanner is the simpler option. For integration projects, check that documentation and a development kit are available for the model you choose.
