Smart card keyboards are full-size keyboards with a built-in card reader, made for people who log in or sign documents with an ID or security card. Our range includes mechanical and membrane models from CHERRY, Dell Technologies and Natec, in QWERTY and AZERTY layouts.
How to choose a smart card keyboard
Card and system compatibility. Check which card types the reader supports. Most read contact chip cards that follow the ISO 7816 standard. Also confirm that drivers exist for your operating system: Windows is usually straightforward, but for macOS or Linux it is worth checking the manufacturer's notes first.
Layout and language. Our range includes QWERTY keyboards with UK English and US English legends, plus an AZERTY keyboard with French legends. Pick the layout you type on every day, because symbols such as @ and £ sit in different places on UK and US keyboards.
Key switch type. Mechanical keyboards have a separate switch under each key, which gives firmer feedback and usually a longer working life. Membrane keyboards are generally quieter and softer to type on, which suits shared offices. Both types are available in our range.
Connection and size. Most smart card keyboards connect by USB cable, because the reader needs a stable wired link to the computer. Check the cable length against your desk setup. If you enter a lot of figures, choose a full-size model with a numeric keypad.

Smart card keyboards: frequently asked questions
What is a smart card keyboard used for?
A smart card keyboard is used to read a chip card while you type, so you can log in securely or sign documents without a separate reader. It is common in government, healthcare, banking and corporate offices. The card acts as a second factor alongside your PIN or password.
Do I need to install drivers for a smart card keyboard?
Often the keyboard types without any setup, but the card reader may need a driver or middleware. Recent versions of Windows can recognise many standard readers automatically. Check the manufacturer's specifications for your operating system and for any software your card issuer requires.
Should I choose a mechanical or membrane smart card keyboard?
Choose mechanical if you type a lot and want distinct key feedback and a long working life. Choose membrane if you want quieter, softer keys, for example in an open-plan office. Both types are in our range, so the decision comes down to typing feel and noise.
Which keyboard layout should I buy?
Buy the layout you already type on, as changing layout slows most people down. Our range has UK English and US English QWERTY models and a French AZERTY model. Check the legends on the keys, since they should match the language your operating system is set to.
