Smart monitors are screens with a built-in operating system, so they can stream video, run apps and connect to a computer without extra hardware. Our range currently features a Samsung model, suited to home offices, study desks and small flats where one screen has to handle both work and entertainment.
How to choose a smart monitor
Screen size and resolution. Sizes of 27 to 32 inches are common for smart monitors. A 4K resolution keeps text and video sharp on a 32-inch screen, whereas Full HD can look soft at that size when you sit close to the desk.
Smart platform and apps. Check which streaming services the monitor supports and whether it offers office apps or remote access to a PC. App availability can differ between countries, so confirm that the services you use are supported in South Africa. A supplied remote control is useful if you plan to watch from a distance.
Connections. HDMI covers consoles, set-top boxes and most laptops. USB-C is worth looking for if you want a single cable for picture and charging, but check whether it supports power delivery and at what wattage. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth let you connect to the network, keyboards and headphones without cables.
Panel type, stand and speakers. VA panels tend to give deeper blacks for films, while IPS panels keep colours steadier from the side. A 60 Hz refresh rate is fine for office work and video, and gamers should look for higher. Height adjustment makes a real difference at a desk, and built-in speakers save space if you do not want separate ones.
Smart monitor brands in our range
- Samsung: its Smart Monitor line is known for a Tizen-based platform with built-in streaming apps and a remote control, which lets the screen work without a computer.
Samsung is currently the only brand in this category in our range, so the choice comes down to whether its size, resolution and ports match your setup.
Smart monitor FAQ
What is a smart monitor?
A smart monitor is a computer monitor with its own operating system and apps. It can play streaming video, open web content and often run office tools directly. It also works as an ordinary display when connected to a laptop or PC.
Can a smart monitor be used without a computer?
Yes, in most cases. The built-in platform lets you stream video and open supported apps over Wi-Fi with only the monitor and its remote control. A computer is still needed for tasks that require full desktop software.
Does a smart monitor need an internet connection?
Only the smart features need one. Streaming and online apps require Wi-Fi or a network cable, but the screen works as a standard monitor through HDMI or USB-C without any connection.
Is a smart monitor better than a TV for a desk?
For desk use, usually yes. Monitors are normally smaller and sharper at close range, and many have height-adjustable stands and USB-C inputs for laptops. A TV makes more sense if you mainly watch from a sofa and want a much larger screen.
