How to choose a TV

Panel technology. OLED screens switch each pixel off individually, which gives deep blacks and works well in dim rooms. QLED, Mini LED and NanoCell sets use an LED backlight with extra layers, and are usually brighter, which helps in a living room with large windows. Our range includes all of these types.

Screen size and viewing distance. A set up to 32 inches suits a kitchen, bedroom or desk, while 75 inches and above only makes sense if you can sit well back from the screen. As a rough guide, a larger screen needs a longer viewing distance to avoid seeing individual pixels and to keep the picture comfortable.

Connections and gaming. Check how many HDMI ports the TV has and whether they support HDMI 2.1 and a 120 Hz refresh rate if you own a recent games console. Also look at the smart platform, because it decides which streaming apps are available and how quickly the menus respond.

Mounting and accessories. Wall mounts and stands are rated for a screen size range and a maximum weight, and they must match the VESA hole pattern on the back of the TV. It is worth confirming all three before you buy. If you only need a replacement remote or a longer HDMI cable, those have their own subcategory.

Is OLED better than QLED?

OLED gives deeper blacks and better contrast, so it suits movies in a dark or dimmed room. QLED and Mini LED usually reach higher brightness, which is useful in a bright room. Neither is better in every situation, so the choice depends on where the TV will sit.

What size TV should I buy for my room?

Measure the distance between the sofa and the TV first. For a 4K TV, many people sit at roughly one to one and a half times the screen diagonal, though this is a guideline rather than a rule. Small rooms and bedrooms are usually better served by a set of 32 to 55 inches.

How do I know if a wall mount fits my TV?

Check three things: the VESA pattern on the back of your TV, your screen size, and its weight. The mount must support all three. The VESA pattern is given in millimetres in the TV manual, for example 200 x 200.
