AC/DC power adapters

AC/DC power adapters convert mains electricity into the low-voltage direct current that routers, LED strips, external drives, laptops and other small electronics run on. The category suits anyone replacing a lost or faulty adapter. Our range currently features a Qoltec model.

Check the voltage, current and plug size against your device before ordering.

How to choose an AC/DC power adapter

Output voltage. The voltage must match what your device asks for. It is usually printed on the original adapter or next to the power socket, with typical values such as 5 V, 12 V or 19 V. A mismatch can stop the device working or damage it, so do not settle for a close value.

Current and wattage. The adapter's rated current (in amps) must equal or exceed what the device needs. Multiply volts by amps to get watts and compare that with the figure on your original charger. A higher rating is safe because the device only draws what it needs, while a lower rating leads to overheating, random shutdowns or a burnt-out adapter.

Connector and polarity. Barrel plugs come in several outer and inner diameters, and the centre pin can be positive or negative. Look for the small polarity symbol on the label and make sure it matches. If you are unsure, measure the plug on your old adapter with a calliper or compare it with the specification.

Fixed or switchable output. Many adapters have a single fixed output, which is the simplest and safest option for one device. Others offer selectable voltages or interchangeable tips, which helps if you want a spare for several devices. Always set the voltage correctly before plugging in.

Safety and build quality. Look for protection against overload, short circuit and overheating, plus CE marking. Check that the cable is long enough to reach the wall socket without strain, since a tight cable is a common reason adapters fail early.

Brands we carry

  • Qoltec: a Polish brand known for power supplies, chargers, cables and other computer accessories, which makes it a familiar name for replacement adapters.

Our range in this category is small at the moment, so it is worth checking the specifications of the model listed against your device label before you buy.

AC/DC power adapter FAQ

What does an AC/DC power adapter do?

An AC/DC power adapter converts alternating current from a wall socket into the lower-voltage direct current that electronic devices use. It sits between the socket and the device, either as a plug-in unit or a box on the cable. Without it, most small electronics could not run from mains power.

How do I know which adapter fits my device?

Read the label on your device or on the original adapter and note the voltage, current and polarity. The new adapter must have the same voltage, at least the same current, and a plug of the same size and polarity. If any of these differ, it is not a safe replacement.

Can I use an adapter with a higher wattage than my device needs?

Yes, provided the voltage matches and the plug fits. The device draws only the current it requires, so a higher-rated adapter simply works with more headroom. An adapter with a lower rating is the one to avoid, as it can overheat.

Does polarity really matter?

Yes, reversed polarity can damage the device or the adapter. Barrel plugs are usually centre-positive, but some equipment is centre-negative. Always compare the polarity symbols on both labels before connecting.
